Mara Keisling, Executive Director

  

Mara is the founding Executive Director of NCTE. A Pennsylvania native, Mara came to Washington after co-chairing the Pennsylvania Gender Rights Coalition. Mara is a transgender-identified woman who also identifies as a parent and a Pennsylvanian. She is a graduate of Penn State University and did her graduate work at Harvard University in American Government. She has served on the board of Directors of Common Roads, an LGBTQ Youth Group, and on the steering committee of the Statewide Pennsylvania Rights Coalition. Mara has almost twenty-five years of professional experience in social marketing and opinion research.

Simon Aronoff, Deputy Director

  

Simon directs NCTE’s programs and communications. Before joining NCTE, Simon served as a Senior Account Executive at Fenton Communications, a public interest communications firm. In that role, he focused on providing communications and strategic planning counsel to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender nonprofits. He has held an appointed seat on San Francisco’s Transgender Civil Rights Implementation Task Force and served on the board of directors of the Transgender Law Center, a civil rights organization advocating for California’s transgender community. He is a graduate of Smith College.

Justin Tanis, Program Manager

  

Justin Tanis earned his M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School and his D.Min. from San Francisco Theological Seminary. He was the director of leadership development for Metropolitan Community Churches in West Hollywood, CA. Justin joined NCTE in August of 2005.

Jaya Kalra, Intern

  

Jaya Kalra is an intern for NCTE from May through August. She is a junior at the University of Michigan, majoring in Sociology with a sub-concentration in Social Inequality and pursuing a minor in math (for fun!). Jaya is a leader of LGBT activism on campus and was recently one of four recipients of the Rosalie Ginsberg Award for Outstanding Campus Impact.

Sarah Cook, Intern

  

Sarah Cook is the NCTE legal intern for summer 2006. Sarah has a BA in Political Science from Oakland University in Rochester, MI. She is currently a student at the Georgetown University Law Center and the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. Sarah is the first recipient of the Georgetown University Anti-Discrimination in Employment Fellowship. Sarah is a proud Michigan native, and would be happy to show you where she is from on her palm.
